The Friends of Mirror Lake State Park were recently honored during the 2012 Awards Banquet held by the Friends of Wisconsin State Parks. Mirror lake State Park was honored as the Best ADA Accessible Park – in the entire state of Wisconsin. Gold Seal Awards are awarded every year and based upon a popular vote.

Through the years Mirror Lake SP has been a leader in making our state parks accessible for all levels of disabilities. We were fortunate to receive the first barrier-free cabin for rental.

The Cabin in the Woods provides an opportunity to get back to nature again for the physically challenged. It was built by the Telephone Pioneers of America, Chapter 4 and gifted to the Department of Natural Resources in the spring of 1991. The 700 square foot log cabin has asphalt surfaced parking and paths, and a screened porch with a panoramic view of Mirror Lake. Inside the cabin is a small kitchen with accessible counter tops, a three-burner stove, microwave, and refrigerator. There is one bedroom with two single beds (one is automatic), and a full-size sofa-sleeper in the living room. The bathroom has a wheel-in shower, a fold-down bench, and a shower-commode chair. A Hoyer lift is provided for use throughout the cabin. Heating and air conditioning are available. The cabin campsite has the usual amenities: a fire ring, post-mounted grill, and picnic table. An accessible observation deck linked to the cabin by an asphalt walk provides a beautiful view of Mirror Lake.

Bridge at Mirror Lake Gorge.
We have a wonderful accessible nature trail, the Echo Rock Trail. It is paved for 0.6 miles.  The trail accesses the overlook and the 155 foot bridge over the Mirror Lake gorge.

Through donations of funding and hard work, we have both an accessible boat launch with a boardwalk and a fishing pier at our boat landing picnic area. The beauty of Mirror Lake can truly be seen from the water, therefore our boat rentals have available an accessible pontoon and one of the new adaptive kayaks for rent each year.

In 2011, two accessible shelters were constructed at the beach and boat landing picnic areas.

In the fall of 2012, we partnered with the Delton Sportsmen’s Club to offer an accessible waterfowl hunting blind at the west end of Mirror Lake.

The Friends of Mirror Lake are an important partner. Most recently, they have helped with the re-construction of our amphitheater. In the seating area the entire second row and council fire ring is ADA compliant.

We are happy to provide and continually support Accessibility in the Outdoors!
