New Glarus State Park - Camping 101

On Sunday, June 3, 2012, from noon to 2:00PM New Glarus State Park is sponsoring a special program which will demonstrate the necessary knowledge and techniques to create and enjoy the skill of camping. The program will be held at the Picnic Shelter by the park entrance.

Presenting the "do's and don'ts" in an entertaining way will be examples of how to:

  • set up a tent in a secure location,
  • safely use cooking equipment,
  • avoid poisonous plants,
  • start and care for a campfire,
  • store food items and proper site maintenance.

Table displays will be set up to identify poison ivy, animal tracks and scat, and information about plants and animals in the Park.

The first 75 attendees will receive a free water canteen (as an incentive to avoid the use of plastic bottles).

Grilled brats will be provided while supplies last.

There is no fee for this event and it is held in combination with WI State Park Open House Day during which no entrance fee is required.

The event is sponsored by the Friends of New Glarus Woods State Park and is partially financed by a grant from the New Glarus Community Foundation. The Friends of New Glarus Woods State Park is a non-profit group that helps promote awareness of the New Glarus Woods, educates all ages about nature and assists in making the Woods an exceptional environment for nature and visitors. The Friends group welcomes new members.
